Our Policies
TCN School Policies
Absences
Attendance is critical to student success both now and in their future college and careers. Students should plan to attend all 180 days of instruction.
That being said, there may be certain reasons your child may have to miss a day of school. As soon as you are aware of the absence please contact our school’s attendance clerk with the reason. The absence must be reported within 48 hours AND meet one of the below reasons to be considered excused. Excessive absences will result in family outreach, SART, SARB and other processes mandated by the state.
Excused absences:
-
Fever(above 100.4) or other serious symptoms (After 2 days of symptoms, a doctor’s note will be needed upon return to excuse absences)
-
For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic services rendered with doctor’s note.
-
Appearance in court.
-
Attendance at a funeral service.
-
Observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats.
Independent Study:
If there is an extenuating circumstance in which your child cannot attend school for 5 or more days, complete an independent study packet request form in the attendance clerk at least 5 days before. It will need to get approval from the TCN principal.
Communication
All formal communication will go through ParentSquare, including our weekly Home School letter! We will be building additional layers of support through room parents and Whatsapp groups to support our communication outreach!
Distraction free environment
Electronics should be off and not visible once a student is on campus. If you need to reach your child, please call the office at 510-879-2190. At any point while on campus, students should NOT use cell phones to record and/or take video(s). If a student has his/her cell phone out during school hours, we will take the following steps:
Step 1: Warning
Step 2: Phone will be collected and the student must call their family to get their phone returned.
Step 3: Phone will be collected and the family must pick up the phone and sign an electronics contract.
Step 4: Phone will be collected for 5 days and it will be returned after a meeting with the principal.
If a student chooses to not only disregard this policy, but also engage in any type of cyber bullying, administration reserves the right to skip steps to ensure a safe community for all.
This same policy applies to bringing toys onto campus. Tools, such as fidge’s, must be approved by the teacher.

Families on campus
Families are welcome on campus to drop off/pick up their students, to enjoy campus events including Panther Paw assemblies and for essential office business. If families intend to be on campus for other reasons they need to pre-arrange with their student’s teacher and/or the office. Family members who are on campus outside of the above mentioned activities, will have to complete the Oakland Ed Fund volunteer process.
Food
Students have access to breakfast and lunch while on campus. You are also welcome to send food with your student when you send them to school. Prior arrangements will need to be made for any and all food deliveries.
In order to ensure our students are prepared for their day, refrain from sending candy and sugary drinks/sodas.
Please coordinate with your child’s teacher and the front office, if you’d like to support the classroom with food and/or other celebratory items (such as for a birthday). The teacher will support you in ensuring we are able to honor the celebration while also adhering to OUSD’s wellness and nutrition guidelines (linked here). If no prior arrangements have been made, we will not be able to accept any materials dropped off for a celebration.
